February Scripts

Friday, December 30th, 2005

The two shows in February are decided on, and the scripts are nearly written.

The 1st show in February will be the aforementioned Episode 2 of The Stargate Cafe. That script is written, though it needs some tweaking, and as soon as we finish recording The Hoff, we’ll start recoring this.

The 2nd show in February, released just before Spring Training on purpose, will be U.M.P.I.R.E. which explores what might happen if you replaced baseball umpires with a computer. This script is not completed yet but I expect to be done with it within the week.

I expect March to be the same, but I haven’t even started thinking about particulars. I have a couple plots of SGC episodes in my head, but I’ve not even plotted them yet. I also have several short stories that can become scripts very easily, and there’s also some longer stories that I think will translate very well to audio. We’ll see.

If it wasn’t for the last minute…

Friday, December 30th, 2005

We’re coming to the wire. My goal was to have this posted by midnight on Sunday, so it’s still on the 1st. I’ve still got, maybe, 5 mintues of show to get down.

Due to several mistakes in planning that I will never make again, each minute of the show takes me roughly an hour, just to get down the raw (well, not totally raw, most of the little clicks and hisses are gone. However, most of the sound effects are not there, and there’s no music to speak of, and I have to piece all the scenes together still, and…)

To make a long story short, I’ve got about 5 hours of work to get the tracks laid down, and then maybe another 5 hours to get the sound effects done, and THEN another maybe 2 hours to get the music (which I’ve decided on!) down and stitch everything together. That’s 12 hours of work, and there’s this little holiday coming up. So, while I still have my eyes on the prize, I’m not making any promises.

December mid-month update

Sunday, December 18th, 2005

We’re at the halfway point of the month, and I am NOT done with SGC 1.1. This is 100% the fault of the holidays. So, I am behind, before even starting.

Luckily, I planned a bit ahead and my deadline is January 1st, which I still expect to hit. But January will require a bit of work to catch up.

I am moving forward on scripts, and the first draft of SGC 1.2 is about 2/3 written. I should be done with that by the end of the day tomorrow, and then the actors who are done with 1.1 can start recording 1.2.

In other words, we’re still moving forward at a brisk pace!

Podcast Update

Monday, December 12th, 2005

Nearly all voices have been recorded for The Stargate Cafe episode 1, and I have cast 1/3 of the parts for The Hoff which will be the 2nd Planet Retcon podcast.

The Hoff is not part of The Stargate Cafe, nor is it a series of its own. It is a stand alone story (Though, being me, I may come up with a sequel some day), and I’ll be doing a decent number of these one-shot stories so you don’t get bored hearing the same characters banter about in every single podcast.

I have also begun writing the script for The Stargate Cafe episode 2, and have chosen another short story to turn into standalone podcast #2.

Standalone stories are likely going to be common. I plan on doing 2 podcasts a month, and it is quite likely that they will alternate, at least for now, between The Stargate Cafe and “something else.” For now, that “something else” is random short stories that have nothing to do with each other. Eventually, I have other series in mind that I’d like to do while The Stargate Cafe is between seasons, or perhaps alongside The Stargate Cafe on the off-weeks instead of the short stories. But there’s plenty of time to decide (and tell you about) that later. For now, I need to get to work on the first episode!

PRC2006A - SGC1.1

Monday, December 5th, 2005

That seemingly random string of letters and numbers (and spaces and a dash. Oh, and a period) represent far more than you’d think.

Coming on January 1st right here on Planet Retcon will be the first of many podcasts of original fictional tales that will range from the comedic to the frightning, from the simple to the epic, and from the… Well, you get the idea. Anything that I can think of to write into a script and get my (currently) small but (hopefully) growing band of actors to read, will be presented in full monophonic sound for your listening pleasure.

Yes, you heard right. Actors. These stories are not podiobooks. These are not “Books on Tape” or anything like that. On January 1st you will be able to listen to a bona fide audo play. Like the ones they used to do in the 50’s, only not so cheesy. My current plan is to release one 15 mintue episode every two weeks until I run out of ideas, which I suspect won’t be for a long time. That’s what the PRC2005A means. Planet Retcon, year 2005, episode A. With 52 weeks in a year, we should just have 26 episodes which makes letters just a peachy way to “number” the episodes. Or, I may do 2 episodes per month, which means 24 episodes a year, and letters will still work.

So, what’s that last half of the name? The SGC1.1? Well, that stands for Stargate Cafe, Season 1, Episode 1. What’s the Stargate Cafe? Well, I’ll have more on that later, but for now think Cheers. Think Northern Exposure. Think Casablanca… Now, think of all of that in SpaAaAaAace!

More to come.
